How a request is charged
Before contacting the Fleet, Modavio reserves the worst-case price for your route — the most expensive tier it is allowed to resolve to. When the answer comes back you are charged for the model that actually answered, and the unused reserve returns to your balance immediately.
That is why auto:code reserves at frontier rates even when it settles cheaper: reserving at the price we hope for is how a gateway ends up selling below cost.
Our margin, stated
Modavio charges 20% over upstream cost (a 1.25× multiple). We publish this because a resale gateway that will not say its markup is asking you to trust an unaudited number.
Cache and helper tokens
Cache reads and cache writes are billed at the input rate. Where the Fleet answers one request using a helper model alongside the primary one, all of that consumption is summed from the routing receipt and billed — the top-level usage summary undercounts it.
Minimum charge per completed request: $0.0005.
What you are never charged for
- Requests rejected before they reach the Fleet (401, 402, 400, 413, 429).
- Upstream capacity failures, timeouts and transport faults — the reserve is returned in full.
- Upstream tool-loop failures (
max_turns).
PREPAID, NOT PRETEND
Spend controls that fail closed.
No credit means no upstream request — the 402 is decided before the Fleet is contacted, and the response says so. Set a per-key spend cap when you want a harder stop than the balance itself.
